Feeling a little lost when it comes to distance learning in your ELA classroom? Here is a list of some of my favorite resources to help guide you. Some of them are free or have a lot of free content and some of them are paid. I will continue to add to this list as I find more. Have something to share? Reach out on Instagram, Facebook, or e-mail me at samanthainsecondary@gmail.com.
Grammar Practice
No Red Ink – This website has a lot of free resources to assign to digital classes. Although I have not seen any additional premium items offered at this time, hopefully they will hop on board with some of the other edtech options because it’s a fantastic site.
Vocabulary or Concept Practice
Kahoot – Kahoot is offering premium resources to teachers at this time. You can assign content-related games (there are plenty of pre-made ones to assign based on the content you are currently working on or you can create your own). This is a great way to keep students’ content knowledge fresh in a fun way.
Quizlet – Quizlet is a great website to help students practice groups of terms. Use it for vocabulary, novel characters, concepts, etc. There are a lot of fun ways for students to practice. Quizlet is offering some premium functionality to teachers right now. Check out the website for more information.
Reading Activities
Digital One Pager – Allow students to choose any novel they would like to read and assess them using a Digital One Pager. This is a resource I created that allows students to show what they know using activities such as movie casting and soundtrack creation. It’s an activity that students tend to really enjoy in my own classroom.
Edulastic – There have been some premium additions made to free Edulastic accounts lately. Edulastic allows you to assign reading to students and assess them using test-prep questions.
Newsela – Newsela has a ton of great resources. The texts can be leveled for different lexile requirements and the texts are engaging. They even have a text set specifically geared towards the coronavirus.
Commonlit – Another site similar to Newsela. A lot of great, free content.
StorylineOnline – Awesome read alouds from tons of famous actors and actresses.
Social Emotional Learning
20 Days: Acts of Service and Kindness – This is an interactive notebook made by @AlissaDevito. If you love this activity, she has many others on her Twitter.
Virtual Field Trips
See a Play! Digital Theatre + is offering premium membership to everyone right now. See plays like Macbeth, The Crucible, Into the Woods, and much more. Just use the username distance and the password learning.
Virtual Field Trips – This Google doc is making the rounds in all of my teacher groups right now and for good reason. I want to take most of these myself! Check out Yellowstone, Mars, or The Great Wall of China all from the comfort of your own home. Thanks to Mrs. Fahrney for compiling the list!
